The term limits poker is one that can be considered an umbrella phrase for an array of different game rules. Whilst all of them have in place a limit of some form, they all vary in the type of limitations that are stated and the following are the primary limits poker games which are played around the world.

Maximum number of raises. In limits poker games that have rules which stipulate a maximum number of raises, no player throughout the game can raise more than the predefined amount.

Pot limit. A popular limits poker game, games with pot limit rules are those which do not allow the player to raise an amount of money that is greater than the total size of the pot.
Fixed Limit. A poker game that abides by fixed limit rules is one in which the players have no control over how much money they are allowed to bet or raise throughout the game and simply only decide if they would like to bet or raise.
As bluffing would not normally be possible in a fixed limit game, some casinos increase the fixed amount at a certain time throughout the game play to allow for bluffing to take place.
Spread Limit. By playing by spread limit rules, play is similar to that in a fixed limit game, but instead of having to bet a specific amount of money, the game allows for any amount between a set range to be bet or raised.
For instance, a game that has a spread limit of ten to twenty would mean that players can bet or raise any figure between ten and twenty pounds.
Cap Limit. Not a widely played rule variation but liked considerably by those who do play, cap limit rules allow for play to be carried out as it would be in a no limits game, until each player reaches an amount that is set by the casino.
An example of cap limit rules would be for a no limit game of five and ten pounds to be played, which featured a one hunred pound cap. This would mean that throughout the hand, players can bet using five or ten pounds, until they reach their player limit of one hundred pounds. Once this happens, all other players can either withdraw from the game or meet the same amount and play would continue without any further betting until the showdown (or similar game ending).
